Question by ‘fran’: ‘Πως λέμε απένταρος στα Αγγλικά?’

My reply to ‘fran’: Όπως αντιλαμβάνεσαι αυτό που θέλεις είναι μια καθημερινή, αρκετά ‘λαϊκή’ φράση. 

Υπάρχουν αρκετές:

• To be broke : I need to buy a new dress for the party but I’m broke.
• To be skint: I’ve spent all my money and now I’m skint.
• Penniless: People who live on the streets are usually penniless.
• Haven’t got a penny to my name: I lost my job last month and now I haven’t got a penny to my name.
• Stony-broke: Sorry, I can’t lend you any money, I am stony-broke.
• Haven’t got two pennies to rub together:  I paid all my bills and now I haven’t got two pennies to rub together.
• Dirt-poor: There are many people in the country who are dirt-poor because of the economical crisis.

My reply to ‘Dretsel907’: Δεν εξηγείς αν το έβγαλες μόνος/η σου ή μεσολάβησε οδοντίατρος!

Αν το έβγαλες μόνος/η σου θα μπορούσες να πεις: ‘I took my tooth out at the first pull’.

Αν πήγες σε οδοντίατρο θα μπορούσες να πεις: ‘I had my tooth out at the first pull’.

ή ‘The dentist took my tooth out at the first pull’.

My reply to ‘tommy’: Πάνω απ’ όλα θέλω να ελπίζω ότι αυτές οι πρακτικές έχουν μειωθεί στο ελάχιστο!

Τώρα στην ερώτησή σου: Συνήθως λέμε:

• ‘The taxi driver took a roundabout route so that the taximeter would register a higher fare’

Όμως υπάρχει και η καλή πλευρά αυτής της φράσης!

• On travelling to our destination we took the roundabout route to take advantage of the beautiful countryside.

Question by ‘Howheels’: ‘Πως λέμε το δάσκαλο οδήγησης, teacher ή instructor;’’

My reply to ‘Howheels’: Σε όλες τις Αγγλόφωνες χώρες λέγεται ‘driving instructor’. Τα γραφεία-σχολές όπου καταφεύγουν οι ενδιαφερόμενοι λέγονται  ‘driving schools’. Τα μαθήματα λέγονται ‘driving lessons’.

Οι προσομοιωτές οδήγησης ονομάζονται ‘driving simulators’. Τώρα θα σου δώσω και μερικές επιπλέον πληροφορίες.

Breath test: τεστ ελέγχου αλκοόλ αναπνοής

Limit of alcohol: όριο οινοπνεύματος (στο αίμα)

Drink driving: οδήγηση υπό την επήρεια οινοπνεύματος

Question by ‘angerman’ : Πως λέμε ‘…πήγαιναν γυρεύοντας για καυγά’

My reply to ‘angerman’: Αν και δεν αναφέρεις λεπτομέρειες δηλ. πως άρχισε ο καυγάς κ.λπ. θα έλεγα ‘ … they were spoiling for a fight’

Spoil for a fight σημαίνει στην καθημερινή (λαϊκή) αργκό: ‘βράζω για καυγά’

Παραθέτω μερικά παραδείγματα:

• Several rival football fans had been spoiling for a fight since before the kick-off (εναρκτήριο λάκτισμα).
• The drunk youths were spoiling for a fight and eventually they stormed out of the bar to settle their differences.

Με την ευκαιρία αυτή θα σου δώσω μερικά παραδείγματα όπου το spoil  έχει άλλη σημασία. 

• Quite a few mothers spoil their children. (κακομαθαίνω)
• When our neighbour had a second floor built on his house it spoilt our view of the sea.(χαλάω)

Question by ‘edmart’: ’Πως λέμε ο νονός μου είναι υπεύθυνος για μένα’;

My reply to ‘edmart’: Μήπως εννοείς …ο νονός μου είναι υπεύθυνος για τη θρησκευτική μου κατάρτιση (εκπαίδευση)…; Αν είναι έτσι τότε θα πρέπει να πεις :

‘My godfather is responsible for my religious education’

ή

‘My godfather guarantees that I will be taught the proper Christian principles’

ή

‘My grandfather will make sure that I receive a sound Christian education’

Αν όμως εννοείς ότι ο νονός σου θα φροντίσει για την κοινωνική σου ‘πορεία’ τότε θα μπορούσαμε να πούμε:

‘My godfather will look after both my social upbringing and welfare’.  

Μερικές προτάσεις:

• My godmother always takes me out on my birthday and buys me presents.
• I can always rely on my godmother when I need somebody to talk to other than my parents.
• My godmother is like a second mother to me.
• In England people mainly use the word ‘christened’ opposed to ‘baptised’.
• Both the words baptise (βαπτίζω, βάπτιση) and christen (από το χριστιανός) are Greek words. (I was born in September and christened the following summer)
• Βαπτίστηκα σε μια παλαιά εκκλησία του Πειραιά. I was christened in an old church in Piraeus close to the port.

Όταν κάποιος ευρίσκεται σε σκληρές οικονομικά συνθήκες (τι σας θυμίζει αυτό;) και αντιμετωπίζει την προοπτική να πουλήσει φτηνά κάποιο οικογενειακό κειμήλιο, ένα ακίνητο κτλ. τότε μπορούμε να πούμε ότι:

‘θα το πουλήσει για ένα κομμάτι ψωμί’!

Όταν κάποιος άλλος που ευρίσκεται σε πολύ πιο καλή οικονομικά κατάσταση θελήσει να το αγοράσει τότε λέμε:

΄θα το αγοράσει μπιρ παρά’ (όχι μπιτ!) (για ένα κομμάτι ψωμί…σε ελεύθερη μετάφραση)

Στην Αγγλική τι λέμε;

Παραδείγματα:

• In Greece, right now, you can buy a flat or a country house for a song!
• Land on the island of Salamina, near Piraeus, was going for a song four decades ago.
• People in need sell their belongings for a song.

Question by ‘alas90’:   ‘πότε γράφουμε worth while και πότε worthwhile’;

• The climbers reached the top of Mount Olympus at midday. They had a wonderful view of the area. It was a worth-while effort. 
• These are worth-while instructions to look at before you start charging your mobile phone.                                          

Περισσότερα παραδείγματα:

• Which is more worthwhile, reading the book or watching its film version?
• Is collecting mobile phones a worth -while hobby?                                                                                                

Εδώ βέβαια υπάρχει και η φράση ‘to be worth’ (αξίζει…τον κόπο, τον μπελά, τα χρήματα) η οποία  έχει τη δυναμική ενός σύνθετου μεταβατικού ρήματος οπότε, φυσικά, χρειαζόμαστε ένα αντικείμενο. Παραδείγματα:

• My sister bought an old porcelain vase at the Sunday market. It is well worth the money.
• It isn’t worth going to the cinema. There is nothing interesting on.

Question by ‘thema2’:  ”Πως λέμε ‘αναπόσπαστο κομμάτι’ στην Αγγλική”;. Μου παραθέτει αυτή τη φράση (μέσα σε μια εκτενή ερώτηση): «…..που είναι αναπόσπαστο κομμάτι της αυτοκρατορίας….».

My reply to ‘thema2′:  Θα έλεγα «…..which is an integral part of the empire…..»

Θα μπορούσα όμως να χρησιμοποιήσω και την ‘καθημερινή’ φράση «…part and parcel…» δηλαδή «…..which is part and parcel of the empire…..».

 Μερικά παραδείγματα:

• «Capture and detention by the military are part and parcel of armed conflict.» Nick Hopkins The Guardian, 2012
• «I too have been shocked by the foul language and hatred that are accepted as part and parcel of football» The Sunday Times, Letters, 2012
• «It’s a bit of a circus, the whole thing. It’s kind of part and parcel of the whole show so you learn to live with it.» GARY BARLOW, The Big Issue, 2012 

Μερικά ακόμη:

• Learning grammar goes part and parcel with learning vocabulary.
• Over exercising goes part and parcel with aching muscles.
• Healthy food goes part and parcel with healthy life style.

My reply to ‘sophie12′:  Αυτό το απόφθεγμα είναι αρκετά παλαιό. Χρησιμοποιείται πάνω από 150 χρόνια. Υπονοεί ότι αν τρως ένα μήλο κάθε ημέρα θα παραμείνεις υγιής. Οι ευεργετικές του

ιδιότητες (περιέχει Vitamin C) είναι πολλαπλές. Θα σου δώσω και άλλη μια φράση που μου αρέσει ιδιαίτερα: «Eat an apple on going to bed, And you’ll keep the doctor from earning his bread.» Υπάρχουν, όμως, αρκετές ακόμα. ________________________________________________________________ 72. Question by ‘pluto’:  ”Ποια είναι η διαφορά μεταξύ ‘adopt’ και ‘adapt”;

My reply to ‘pluto’:   ‘adopt’ σημαίνει .. υιοθετώ, ασπάζομαι, ενστερνίζομαι κτλ …

• When a couple can’t have children of their own they may choose to adopt a child.
• My friend’s mum and dad aren’t her biological parents, she is adopted.

‘adopt’ επίσης σημαίνει … υιοθετώ πχ. μια στάση, ένα σχέδιο, ένα επιχείρημα κτλ.

• The robber adopted an attitude of hostility when the police arrested him.
• The company adopted all the proposals made by the employees.

Επομένως ..

• we adopt a child .. υιοθετούμε ένα παιδί
• we adopt a pet .. υιοθετούμε ένα κατοικίδιο
• we adopt a policy .. υιοθετούμε/ενστερνιζόμαστε μια πολιτική
• we adopt a plan .. υιοθετούμε/ακολουθούμε  ένα σχέδιο

Τώρα το adapt Adapt σημαίνει ..προσαρμόζομαι/προσαρμόζω

• When you move to another country you must adapt to their customs and life style.
• If you buy electrical goods from another country it is sometimes necessary to use an adaptor plug.
• I used to live in the country (εξοχή) so it took me a while to adapt to city life.

Επομένως ..

• We adapt to something .. προσαρμοζόμαστε σεκάτι
• We adapt ourselves to something .. προσαρμοζόμαστε σε κάτι
• We adopt something to something else .. προσαρμόζουμε κάτι πάνω σε κάτι άλλο
• We use an adaptor .. χρησιμοποιούμε ένα μετασχηματιστή προσαρμογής

Και τώρα πηγαίνω σε μια άλλη λέξη άσχετη σε έννοια με τις δύο προηγούμενες αλλά που δημιουργεί ερωτήσεις στους σπουδαστές της γλώσσας … adept Adept σημαίνει .. έμπειρος, ειδικός, πεπειραμένος. My reply to ‘lilano’:

Πάνω απ’ όλα πρέπει να ξεχάσουμε το ρήμα ‘έχει’ ! Δε μπορούμε να πούμε ‘has quiet’ ! Θα χρησιμοποιήσουμε τη φράση: ‘to be quiet’ Επομένως έχουμε: ‘ This room is very quiet’  και ‘όχι ‘This room has very quiet’ !! Με την ίδια λογική έχουμε: ‘Κάνει κρύο εδώ’ γίνεται ‘It is cold here’ και ‘Κάνει ζέστη εδώ’ γίνεται ‘It is hot here’. Μερικά πιο ‘advanced’ παραδείγματα:

• There must be complete quiet when students are taking a test.
• Students must be quiet when the teacher is talking.
• The children were very noisy so they were told to be quiet.

My reply to ‘redray’:   Μάλλον θα θέλεις το succeed (επιτυγχάνω) και succeed (διαδέχομαι).  Παραδείγματα

• We all want to succeed (επιτυγχάνω) in life. It’s human nature.

Question by ‘stew22’:   Ποια είναι η σχέση μεταξύ της λέξης ‘recovery’ και της λέξης ‘ανάρρωση ’;                                                                                                                                  My reply to ‘stew22′:    Δε καταλαβαίνω ακριβώς τι εννοείς…’recovery ’ σημαίνει και ‘ανάρρωση ’. Βέβαια σημαίνει και άλλα πράγματα. Θα σου δώσω μερικά παραδείγματα που ίσως σε βοηθήσουν περισσότερο. Όλα ξεκινούν από το ρήμα ‘recover ’ (αναρρώνω). Παραδείγματα

• The young goalkeeper hasn’t fully recovered (δεν έχει αναρρώσει εντελώς)after his collision with an opponent during a second division match.

• 

  Police often train to recover hostages taken by force, as in this exercise

• The unlucky motorcyclist was still in coma after he had fallen off  his bike and hit his head against a lamp post. It is unlikely that he will ever recover consciousness. (ανακτήσει τις αισθήσεις του)

• It took Jerry a long time to recover from his accident/injuries.

• I am sorry to hear that you are ill, I wish you a speedy recovery. (γρήγορη ανάρρωση)

Όμως υπάρχουν και άλλες χρήσεις. Παραδείγματα

• Unfortunately I had a minor car accident and I had to call for a recovery truck (γερανοφόρο φορτηγό) to take my car to a body repair shop.

• There are numerous companies providing data recovery software (προγράμματα για ανάκτηση χαμένου ηλεκτρονικού υλικού) for home as well as business users.

Δεν πάει… άλλο!

-  ‘Πως λέμε ‘φτάνω στο απροχώρητο;’ Αρκετά συχνά μερικά πράγματα στη ζωή μας δεν πηγαίνουν καλά κι έτσι είμαστε αναγκασμένοι να παίρνουμε αποφάσεις που κάτω από άλλες συνθήκες (καλύτερες) δεν θα παίρναμε. Όταν λοιπόν κάποια κατάσταση φτάσει στο απροχώρητο, τι λέμε στην Αγγλική;  ‘If push comes to shove’ (push=σπρώχνω / shove=σπρώχνω ‘άγαρμπα’) Παράδειγμα:

•  Ok. if push comes to shove my eldest brother will just have to move to another country.
• Mary is looking around for a job but, if push comes to shove she will move back to her parents house.
• Tom would rather keep his old antique car but since he hasn’t got a regular job and if push comes to shove he’ll just have to sell it.

Marriage ….Wedding …. Γάμος… Για πολλούς ανθρώπους ο γάμος ως μυστήριο είναι πράξη ιερή και αγία. Ο Θεός ‘πάντρεψε’ τον Αδάμ και την Εύα, τους ένωσε  στον Παράδεισο, λέγοντάς τους “αὐξάνεσθεκαὶπληθύνεσθεκαὶπληρώσατετὴνγῆνκαὶκατακυριεύσατεαὐτῆς” (Γενέσ. α’ 28). (And God blessed them, saying: Increase and multiply, and fill the earth, and subdue it,..) Αυτά είναι ωραία να τα διαβάζει κάποιος αλλά πως θα λέγαμε στην Αγγλική  ‘παντρεύομαι ‘  ‘γάμος’ κλπ.; Θα σας δώσω μερικά παραδείγματα:

Marry / παντρεύομαι Wed/ παντρεύομαι

• It doesn’t cost much to marry at a registry office.
• Tim and Tina have been happily married for twenty years.
• Will you marry me?
  

  going to marry a girl in it…

• He married her for her money.
• After having been married for many years they got a divorce.
• They wedded in a remote little church on a beautiful Greek island.

 Marriage /γάμος  (θεσμός)

• Marriage is love. Marriage is affection. Marriage is children.
• She has a successful marriage. She loves her husband and he adores her.

 Wedding / γάμος (εκκλησιαστικό μυστήριο)

• They had a lovely wedding and everybody enjoyed themselves.
• They had a white weddingin a orthodox church.

Reply to ‘neote16′:   Δεν αναφέρεσαι συγκεκριμένα σε κάτι. Μήπως εννοείς ‘πινακίδες  αυτοκινήτου’; Αν είναι πινακίδες αυτοκινήτου:

• registration plates ή number plates (Ηνωμένο Βασίλειο)
• license plate (Ηνωμένες Πολιτείες Αμερικής).

Παράδειγμα:

• Everyone must memorise their registration plate / number plate / license plate in case they are stopped by the police.

Αν είναι πινακίδες στους δρόμους για την εύρυθμη κυκλοφορία αυτοκινήτων και πεζών:

• traffic signs ή road signs

Παράδειγμα:

• It is helpful when travelling traffic signs or road signs are clearly placed.

Αν είναι πινακίδες καταστημάτων:

• shop signs, shopfront signs

Παράδειγμα:

• Shop signs / shopfront signs must be designed to attract customers.

Αν είναι πίνακες ανακοινώσεων:

• notice boards

Παράδειγμα:

• The use of notice boards is a very effective way of advertising.

Question by ‘alto25’:   «Πως λέμε στα Αγγλικά ‘μεγάλωσα φτωχή’;

Reply to ‘alto25′:   Η κλασσική φράση είναι ‘ I grew up poor.’ ! Φυσικά μπορείς επίσης να πεις: “I came from a poor family”. Όμως θέλω να τονίσω εδώ πως λέμε κάποια άλλα πράγματα που έχουν σχέση με τη λέξη  ‘μεγαλώνω’ . Μεγαλώνω (εγώ ο ίδιος): grow up

• My children are growing up in a safe environment.
• I grew up in the suburbs of Bristol. 

Με μεγαλώνουν (ανατρέφουν): bring up

• I was brought up by very loving parents
•  You must bring up your children to be respectful and have morals.
• You bring up your children to know right from wrong.
• I was brought up in a typical Piraeus neighbourhood. 
• I was brought up by my grandmother 
• I was brought up by foster parents
• I was brought up in an orphanage.

Εκτρέφω: breed (μεγαλώνω ζώα κλπ)

• Some people like their pets to be a special breed (pedigree / καθαρόαιμο).
• Some horses are bred for racing.

Φυτεύω και μεγαλώνω/φροντίζω (λαχανικά, βολβούς κλπ): grow

• We always grew vegetables and fruit in our back garden.
• I love growing plants and flowers.

Question by ‘lena’:    «Ποια είναι η διαφορά μεταξύ ‘salon’  και ‘saloon’;

Reply to ‘lena’:   Καλή ερώτηση! Δε γνωρίζω αν έχεις επισκεφτεί ποτέ ένα ‘beauty salon’ δηλαδή ένα ‘ινστιτούτο  ομορφιάς’. Αν δεν έχεις, σε πληροφορώ ότι εκεί μπορείς να κάνεις:

• hand manicure  και pedicure ( ‘nail salons’)
• foot care
• haircut
• aromatherapy
• massage
• facials (facial masks)
• hair removal

και πολλά άλλα προϊόντα με τα οποία, ομολογώ,  ότι δεν είμαι καθόλου εξοικειωμένος. Υπάρχουν φυσικά και τα : ‘hairdressing salons’ (κομμωτήρια) Τώρα το ‘saloon’.  Εδώ τα πράγματα είναι διαφορετικά. Φεύγουμε από τις κρέμες και τα συναφή και πάμε στα ‘σίδερα’ και τα ‘πλαστικά’. Για παράδειγμα, εάν δηλώσω ότι έχω ένα αυτοκίνητο ιδιωτικής χρήσης θα πω:

• I’ve got a saloon car.

Λέγοντας αυτό εννοώ ότι το αυτοκίνητό μου δεν είναι ούτε a sports car ούτε an estate car . Απλά είναι ένα συμβατικό αυτοκίνητο  όπως τα βλέπουμε στους δρόμους τα τελευταία 50-60 χρόνια.  Τα saloon cars είναι η πλειοψηφία των αυτοκινήτων.  Άλλα ονόματα των saloon  cars στην Ελληνική είναι: «κούρσα», «αμάξι», «τετράτροχο» κλπ.. Στην Αγγλική έχουμε τα:

• Two seaters (διθέσια κλασσικά sports cars) (England)
• 2-Door Coupes (διθέσια sports cars) (USA)
• Convertibles ή open air cars (ξεσκέπαστα)
• Hatchbacks (με την οπίσθια πόρτα να ανοίγει προς τα ψηλά)
• Estate cars (England) για όλη την οικογένεια + dog(s) (μειώθηκε η κατασκευή τους)
• Station wagons (USA) για όλη την οικογένεια + dog(s)
• 4×4 (τα λεγόμενα SUV ) Sport Utility Vehicle / ΠΡΟΣΟΧΗ: Οι ιδιοκτήτες αυτοκινήτων της εταιρίας Jeep ‘δικαιούνται’ να δηλώνουν ότι έχουν ένα αυτοκίνητο Jeep.

  Οι άλλοι που έχουν 4χ4 άλλων εταιριών, απλά  έχουν αυτοκίνητα SUV (Suzuki, Toyota κλπ.) και όχι, φυσικά, Jeep. Το Jeep ανήκει σε μια εταιρία!

• People carrier (μεταφέρει ανθρώπους, προσωπικό εταιριών κλπ)
• Minivan (μεταφέρει, συνήθως, τεχνίτες και τα εργαλεία τους)
•  Transit van (μεταφέρει ανθρώπους, εργαλεία και ότι  μπορεί να φανταστεί κάποιος. Πολύ δημοφιλή.)
• 4-door sedans (αυτό που λέμε saloon car) (USA)

Υπάρχουν όμως και ποτοπωλεία που ονομάζονται saloons και με τα οποία είμαστε όλοι εξοικειωμένοι , κυρίως, από τα western films.

Question by ‘seagull’ :   ”Πως λέμε ‘ Έχω ένα φοβερό πονοκέφαλο” ;

My Reply to ‘seagul’: Όταν έχουμε ένα ήπιο πονοκέφαλο λέμε: ‘I’ve got a mild headache. It’s not that bad.’ Όταν έχουμε ένα επίμονο πονοκέφαλο που δεν υποχωρεί και σχεδόν μας ‘τρελαίνει’ λέμε:

•   I’ve got a splitting (που μου ‘σχίζει’ το κεφάλι) headache!
•   I’ve got a terrible (τρομερό) headache!
•   I’ve got a nagging (επίμονο κ’ ενοχλητικό) headache.

Και με την ευκαιρία αυτή θα σου δώσω και μερικούς ακόμα τύπους ‘πόνων’ !

• Cramp: I was running and suddenly I got a cramp in the calf of my leg. Colic: When my son was a baby he suffered with colic.
• Crick: When I woke up in the morning I had a crick in my neck and it was painful to move my head.
• Cramps: Many young women have cramps during the first days of their period.

• Bellyache: Bellyache is a pain in your lower abdomen.
• Eye strain: If you read for many hours you may get eye strain.
• Dead leg: I fell asleep in the chair and woke up with a dead leg.
• Earache: Mary had earache caused by an ear infection which was very painful.
• Migraine: Migraines give you very bad headaches.
• Period pains: see cramps
• Tennis elbow: Some professional tennis players suffer from tennis elbow which is a dull pain around the elbow area.
• Pins and needles: Holding a phone for a long period of time can give you pins and needles.
• Sciatica: Sciatica is a pain resulting from a trapped nerve which runs from the lower back down the leg.
• Growing pains: Many children going through puberty suffer from growing pains because their bodies grow at such a fast rate.
• Sting: A bee sting can be very painful.
• Stitch: Sometimes when out jogging you can get a sudden sharp pain in your side which is called a stitch.
• Stomach ache: If you eat very spicy food it can cause stomach ache.
• Writer’s cramp: When writing my thesis by hand for university I suffered from writer’s cramp in my right hand.
• Toothache: I had a cavity in my tooth which caused me chronic toothache.
• Electric shock: If you touch a bare electrical wire you are very likely to get an electric shock.
• Lumbago: Lumbago can be very painful causing great pain in your lower back.

Ένα άλλο παράδειγμα:

• Τώρα που γονείς μου δεν είναι πια μαζί βλέπω τον πατέρα μου στη χάση και τη φέξη!’ 
• Now that my parents live separately I see my dad once in a blue moon!’

Επομένως, στη χάση και τη φέξη, ‘once in a blue moon’ Στην ανάρτηση 68, Πως λέμε…(1-102) υπάρχουν παρόμοιες εκφράσεις.
