Πολλοί φίλοι του blog θέλουν να μάθουν τι είναι το subjunctive (υποτακτική έγκλιση). Υποθέτω ότι η έγκλιση αυτή παρουσιάζει κάποιες δυσκολίες. Θα εξηγήσω μερικά σημεία όσο πιο απλά μπορώ. Ξεκινώ λοιπόν.

Ερώτηση:

‘Γιατί έχουμε σε μια πρόταση ένα ρήμα στο τρίτο ενικό πρόσωπο χωρίς –s ;’  

Παραδείγματα

• I advise (that) Thomas do his homework over the weekend.
• I demand (that) this man leave my office right now.
• I recommend (that) Mary see a doctor immediately.

Απάντηση:

Το subjunctive είναι μία ειδική κατασκευή του simple present,  χρησιμοποιούμενη κυρίως από Αμερικανούς. Ομιλείται και γράφεται από ανθρώπους με αρκετά καλή εκπαίδευση. Στην Αγγλία περισσότερο ομιλείται παρά γράφεται. Θα έλεγα ότι είναι formal κατασκευή. Εδώ και πολλά χρόνια οι θεωρητικοί της Αγγλικής γραμματικής πίστευαν και πιστεύουν ότι κάποια ημέρα το subjunctive θα εξαφανιστεί. Όμως υπάρχει ακόμα και ‘βασανίζει’, κυρίως, εκείνους που εξετάζονται σε Αμερικανικές εξετάσεις.  Αυτό που συγκεντρώνει την προσοχή μας είναι ότι στο τρίτο πρόσωπο δεν βάζουμε –s ! Στη (νέα) ελληνική γλώσσα οι εγκλίσεις είναι τρεις (για να μη ξεχνιόμαστε!):

• Οριστική:

Η μητέρα μου τηγανίζει πατάτες. My mum is frying chips.

• Υποτακτική:

Ο γιατρός είπε να πίνουμε πολύ νερό. The doctor told us to drink a lot of water.

• Προστακτική:

Πάτα καλά στα πόδια σου. Try to keep steady on your feet.

Ερώτηση:

‘Γιατί το βοηθητικό ρήμα to be παρουσιάζεται ως be στα παραδείγματα που ακολουθούν, δηλαδή που είναι το am, are, is ;’

Παραδείγματα

• Kate suggested (that) her brother be more honest with her.
• Dad insisted (that) Mum be stricter with us.
• She proposed (that) the headmaster be present at the meeting.  

Το ρήμα be παραμένει στη μορφή αυτή επειδή δεν ‘κλίνεται’ δηλαδή δε λέμε ‘I am, you are κλπ.’ Αλλά λέμε ‘I be, you be, he be, she be, it be, we be, you be, they be’ . Παράξενη κατασκευή για πολλούς. Ίσως επειδή είναι ‘uninflected’ (δεν κλίνεται).  Αν θέλετε περισσότερες πληροφορίες, εδώ είμαι!

EGG-Subjunctive Mood

Should:

• I suggest you (should) study harder. (Όταν το suggest είναι στον ενεστώτα μπορούμε να παραλείψουμε το should)            
• Tom suggested that his friends should stay overnight. (Όταν το suggest είναι στον αόριστο δε μπορούμε να παραλείψουμε το should)            
• She recommended that he should go and see his doctor.
