Grow up ……!


Στο e-mail του/της ‘alto25’ διάβασα: «Πως λέμε στα Αγγλικά ‘μεγάλωσα φτωχή’;

–       Η κλασσική φράση είναι ‘ I grew up poor.’ !

Όμως θέλω να τονίσω εδώ πως λέμε κάποια άλλα πράγματα που έχουν σχέση με τη λέξη  ‘μεγαλώνω’ .

Μεγαλώνω (εγώ ο ίδιος): grow up

  • My children are growing up in a safe environment.

  • I grew up in the suburbs of Bristol. 
Με μεγαλώνουν (ανατρέφουν): bring up
  • You must bring up your children to be respectful and have morals.
  • You bring up your children to know right from wrong.
  • I was brought up in a typical Piraeus neighbourhood. (εδώ μπορείς να βάλεις I was brought up by my grandmother ή by foster parents ή in an orphanage  κλπ.

Εκτρέφω: breed (μεγαλώνω ζώα κλπ)

  • Some people like their pets to be a special breed.
  • Some horses are bred for racing.

Φυτεύω και μεγαλώνω/φροντίζω (λαχανικά, βολβούς κλπ): grow

  • We always grew vegetables and fruit in our back garden.
