Η φίλη του blog, ‘kartsi’, ρωτά: ‘Με ποιες λέξεις λέμε στα Αγγλικά…αν και;’

Χωρίς να θέλω να σε ζαλίσω με λεπτομέρειες πρέπει τουλάχιστον να σου πω εδώ ότι ο γενικός τίτλος (γραμματικής) είναι CONCESSION. Με άλλα λόγια πρόκειται για λέξεις που χρησιμοποιούμε όταν θέλουμε να δείξουμε αντίθεση. Αν και έχω αναφέρει ήδη κάπου στο blog τις λέξεις although, though κτλ., θα ήθελα ακόμα μια φορά να εξηγήσω πότε και γιατί χρησιμοποιούμε αυτούς τους συνδέσμους.

Παραδείγματα:

Ξεκινώ με το although και αμέσως μετά σου δίνω παραδείγματα με παρόμοιες λέξεις.

My mum told me not to stay up late. I still went to bed after the midnight news.
Although my mum had (already) told me not to stay up late, I still went to bed after the midnight news.

He was very poor, but he gave all he had to the wretched beggar.
Even though he was very poor, he gave all he had to the wretched beggar.

My motorbike was brand new. However, (παρ’ όλα αυτά) the exhaust pipe came off on my first ride.
Though my motorbike was brand new, the exhaust pipe came off on my first ride.

Υπάρχουν όμως και περιπτώσεις που θα θέλαμε να τονίσουμε ιδιαίτερα κάποιες καταστάσεις. Σου δίνω μερικά παραδείγματα.

Mary had been preparing hard for her university entrance exams but she never passed.
Despite the fact that Mary had been preparing hard for her university entrance exams, she never passed. (το despite δεν είναι σύνδεσμος, είναι πρόθεση και ακολουθείται από ουσιαστικό ή γερούνδιο)

Though it was raining, we enjoyed our walk.
In spite of the fact that it was raining, we enjoyed our walk. (το in spite of δεν είναι σύνδεσμος, είναι πρόθεση και ακολουθείται από ουσιαστικό ή γερούνδιο)

Even though it was raining, we enjoyed our walk.
Despite the fact that it was raining, we enjoyed our walk.

Επίσης θέλω να προσέξεις ιδιαίτερα τις παρακάτω κατασκευές. Είναι σημαντικό να τις καταλάβεις γιατί παρουσιάζονται τακτικά σε εξετάσεις όλων των ειδών!

Ρήμα: Although they tried hard to cross the river, they couldn’t.
           Try as they might, they found it impossible to cross the river.

Επίθετο: Howard was very brave but fear filled him as he saw the giant wave towering over his frail craft.
…………………. as ……………………………………………………………………………….
…………………… though ……………………………………………………………………..
Brave as Howard was, fear filled him as he saw the giant wave towering over his frail craft.

Επίρρημα: I would like very much to buy a Rolls Royce but I can’t afford one.

Much as I would like to buy a Rolls Royce, I can’t afford one.

However: Although he loved her very much, she wouldn’t marry him.
However much he loved her, she wouldn’t marry him.
