My reply to ‘’alexia’’: Στην ουσία με ρωτάς πως λέμε ότι κάτι μας κόστισε τόσο πολύ και φυσικά ξοδέψαμε πάρα πολλά χρήματα.

Υπάρχουν πολλές εκφράσεις, άλλες formal άλλες informal, αλλά έχω ένα-δύο που τις χρησιμοποιώ τακτικά.

Παραδείγματα:

That book is expensive. It must have cost you a pretty penny!

  • Are you sure you can afford this gift? It costs a pretty penny!
  • Nice T-shirt! It must have cost you a pretty penny!

an arm and a leg

Παραδείγματα:
  • I‘ve always liked Volvo cars but they cost an arm and a leg!
  • Last year I went on a tour of Africa. It cost me an arm and a leg!
  • Go careful with your money. Eating out may cost you an arm and a leg!

Συνηθισμένες εκφράσεις:

  • It costs a lot of money
  • It is very expensive
  • It is too dear (dear σημαίνει ΚΑΙ ακριβό!)

etc.
